A Winter Expedition: Tracking Western Horned Tragopans in Allai Valley
The dense forests of Allai Valley in District Battagram, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, hold one of nature's most elusive gems: The Western Horned Tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus).
After days of relentless trekking, the team finally spotted their first Western Horned Tragopan. A flash of red and grey against the snowy backdrop, the male bird darted through dense underbrush, its striking plumage briefly illuminated by the soft morning light. In total, eight sightings were recorded.

Mohebullah's journey as a wildlife photographer and conservationist is a testament to the power of following one's passion despite facing challenges like dyslexia.
Mohebullah remains dedicated to his work with WWF-Pakistan. One of his major achievements is his work on common leopards in Margalla Hills National Park, where seven leopards were successfully identified and tracked. He is currently working on the conservation of critically endangered species, including the cheer pheasant and parakeets.

The common leopard (Panthera pardus), a majestic and elusive big cat, has found sanctuary in the Margalla Hills National Park (MHNP)—a testament to successful conservation efforts in an urbanadjacent ecosystem.
I had the honour of serving as the team lead, where our work revealed an estimated population of eight common leopards residing in the Margalla Hills National Park (MHNP)—a number that felt both fragile and full of promise.
Rare wild pheasants in Pakistan face extinction threat
Pakistan is fast losing several rare wild pheasant species due to a string of threats including habitat degradation, hunting, climate change and human intervention
“Poaching and hunting are mostly carried out by locals living near pheasant habitats. While often treated as a sport, hunting pheasants is illegal,” said Naveed, a wildlife conservation officer with the Himalayan Wildlife Foundation, an Islamabad-based wildlife organization.
Rediscovery of the Critically Endangered Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) in Punjab, Pakistan
The critically endangered gharial was rediscovered in the Sutlej River in Pakistan in May 2023 after more than 30 years.
This led to the creation of a 70-kilometer Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary along the river to protect the gharials. The rediscovery of the gharial is significant for scientific study and conservation efforts in the Indo-Pakistani subcontinent.
